Salmon alone is abundant in five different species in Alaskan waters with Alaska holding the world record for the highly desired and hunted King Salmon. You can indulge yourself with all this spectacular fishing and that too in a magnificent place such as Alaska.

Alaska Fishing In Different Regions

Alaska is a vast and very sparingly inhabited land. It has many different regions and Alaska fishing is different in all these regions. Here is a look at Alaska fishing according to its various areas.

  • South Central Alaska: This region is the most densely inhabited region of Alaska and also boasts some of Alaska’s most celebrated fishing areas. The South central region starts from east of the Copper River and extends up to Bristol Bay. This is a diverse area and water bodies include coastal waters and watersheds. The land has majestic trees and mountains including the continent’s tallest mountain, McKinley (or Denali). The coastal waters and the bigger rivers are teeming with thousands of Salmon. Halibut can also be effortlessly caught in some areas, as well as other ocean fish. Trout, whitefish, pike, Dolly Varden, grayling, and other type of fish can be found throughout the year in many watersheds. This region is truly awesome for Alaska fishing.
  • Southeast Alaska: This region is also known as the ‘panhandle’. The Tongass National Forest accounts for much of the land in this area. The rest is made up of bottomless fjords, gushing mountain brooks and glaciers and this is where the incredible Alaska fishing is done. Salmon do not actually inhabit this area but return to numerous streams in great numbers every year. In the summers, Halibut inhabit the waters closer to shore and many types of trout can also be seen. Bottom fish can be caught in abundance in the southeast region, which also sees some variety of even shrimp and crab in some water bodies.
  • Interior, Arctic and Western Alaska: This region is home to the vast Kuskokwim and Yukon rivers. The Interior is tree covered whereas the Arctic and Western areas do not have much tree cover but wide river valleys and water streams. Salmon are not year round inhabitants of this region but make long distance migratory trips up the Kuskokwim and Yukon rivers. The most abundant of fish is the grayling but one can also fish a wide variety of pike, trout, burbot, sheefish, and char in this region of Alaska.

Alaska fishing is truly a great experience; the magnificence of which cannot be explained in words but has to be seen to be believed.
